A flash of green light echoes around him, and just for a moment everything seems to hang on the edge of time, and this is what it’s like to die. It’s painfully real and James is still conscious. Still fully conscious as he feels his legs buckle, horrible fiery hot pain engulfing his limbs and then all colours are fading from his vision, the room around him turning grey and washed-out. A wave of terrible, pathetic fear fills his chest, for Lily and Harry and I’ve failed them, what can I do now, what if they die, it’ll be me, my fault, they’re going to die, and it was my fault for trusting him, and for himself, because he doesn’t know what’s supposed to happen after death.
A kaleidoscope of brightly coloured images running through his mind: the scarlet train puffing smoke on his first day at Hogwarts, Sirius, Remus, Peter, and oh Merlin, Lily. Pranks, laughter, McGonagall scowling down at them, Snape getting what he deserved, the Whomping Willow’s flailing branches and a teenage werewolf covered in scratches. A red-haired girl, annoying and then breathtakingly beautiful; a new sense of justice after his father’s death and a shiny Head Boy badge, and finally kisses in the rain. Leaving school; drunken nights out with his friends and a wedding day, Lily in a white dress and radiant, his mother’s death and after that the birth of a baby boy. Being a father, the smell of baby powder on Lily’s hands and a war, flashing sparks jetting from wands as he tried to protect his family the best that he could.
And now it’s come to this: his vision fading in a room full of death and fear and betrayal, and finally everything is black and empty.
Abruptly, James opens his eyes.

| [locked to Lily] [pre-Milliways] |
[03 May 2005|10:28pm] |
Set in the summer of 1981.
James clattered into the house, glancing around as he discarded his jacket onto a coat-stand. "Lily!" he called. "Lils, I'm home, where are you?" It had been a long day; sometimes he regretted choosing to be an Auror. Mostly he was glad with his choice, but it was a very difficult and tiring job. When he got home, though, he tended to forget all about the day he'd had, concentrating with some glee on his small family.
Almost tripping over an errant shoe, he rounded a corner into the living room, his face breaking into a wide smile at the sight of Lily and Harry.
